The completed Kapolei theater complex     The construction industry has always been a benchmark indicating economic well-being or distress. Only the best engineering and construction firms can weather the downturns. Duane Cargill, founder and President of Western Engineering, knows that teamwork is the only way to thrive. He has led his talented team through the peaks and valleys of Hawaii's economy since 1973, providing that excellence breeds longevity. The diversified construction firm is now the 19th largest in the islands, holding true to its founding principle of being "established in Hawaii for Hawaii." The success is based on skill and a careful approach to each and every project. Strong hands-on management ensures victory over even the most challenging undertakings.McKinley High School after the resotration Western Engineering's accomplishments include a range of varied projects, from commercial, medical and industrial, to schools, shopping centers and affordable housing. Like Cargill, Western Engineering's managers and supervisors are experienced in every aspect of construction, from preliminary estimates to the actual trades involved.
"Our goal is to offer architects, owners and construction consultants an opportunity to work with a proven leader," notes Cargill. The firm's expertise and capabilities are evident throughout Hawaii. Consolidated Amusement's 16-theater entertainment complex is a dramatic demonstration of Western Engineering's diversified abilities, seen in the projects magnitude as well as the incredibly tight construction schedule.
The entertainment facility shows off the firm's finish work. The interior is as refined as it is complex and dramatic. Consolidated Amusement's confidence in Owner, Duane CargillWestern Engineering came in part from their success with the Hawaii Film Facility-the first custom sound stage ever built in Hawaii-in which sound isolation was a critical factor. Other recent projects completed by the company include the restoration of historic McKinley High School, and the 54,000-square-foot Sack 'n Save retail facility.
Despite Hawaii's pinched construction market, Cargill is characteristically bold. "By maintaining our level of excellence with strong hands-on management bringing projects in on time and within budget, we will continue to prosper," he declares.
